Khalsa is an Arabic word that means purity and freedom. I named the studio Khalsa as deep down we are spiritual beings, by practising kundalini yoga regularly we awaken the soul, the container of our spirit which is pure and divine in its nature and connecting to this divinity within us we become free, free from negativity, free from inner conflict, free from anxiety, fear and depression. We become who we were meant to be!
I started practicing yoga about 10 years ago in order to become more flexible for martial arts, mainly ashtanga yoga, hot yoga and power yoga. It wasn’t until 2010 when I started researching alternative methods to deal with depression and anxiety that I discovered Kundalini yoga. After almost 15 years of medication my kidneys were giving me trouble so I decided to stop taking medication and started getting up at 6am to practice for 2 hours. As there were no classes or teachers in kilkenny at the time, I had to learn from books and youtube. Within 3 weeks I could feel a big improvement in my mood and well being so I continued to with the early practice and decided to do the teacher training here in Ireland and France so that I could teach other people and allow them to receive the benefits this wonderful practice, after all, not only was I no longer depressed I was happy for the first time in years. This was despite being told by my doctor that I would be on medication for the rest of my life.
I have spent the past 7 years continuing to train with various teachers throughout Europe and spend most of my time studying the connection between mind body and spirit with a keen interest in neurology, psychology and endocrinology in the field of Kundalini yoga. I continue with my early morning practice of kriyas, meditation and mantras (chanting), which has transformed my life and continues to do so.
